THESE SCENTS WILL SHIFT YOUR MOOD

As you may already know, I am a huge believer in the power of natural remedies and a holistic approach to life. Using chemicals and toxic products to fix your temporary issues is a bandaid that frankly doesn’t work long term, you know?

**If it is absolutely necessary, I am never opposed. Go for it. Do what you gotta do. No judgement over here, but wanted to throw this out there.

Because I am someone who does live with anxiety and as I like to call it, “chronic stress,” I have been forced to find these natural remedies so that I can live a calmer life.

My mom and I were just on the phone the other day laughing because we realized that a lot of my self-care techniques are actually inspired by Pedro. He is my high maintenance boyfriend who likes his wellness products, but also has good taste in what he uses! We find it funny because we love him.

One of my favorite natural remedies has to do with scents.

I’ve been really excited to share this post, so I hope you like it!

There is a lot of research that has been done on how scents affect the mood. Your sense of smell is actually the most powerful of all 5 senses. Did ya know? If you didn’t, glad I was able to teach you something new!

Scents have the power to evoke different emotions and memories, just as music does! I wrote a post about this a while back if you want to check it out.

Have you ever smelled something that reminds you of a person or a place? That is powerful! I mean, the fact that the scent reminds you of something and can shift your mood is crazy + amazing.

I want to give you an example.

I love to travel. Pedro’s family is from Barcelona. You know when you go to a new place and there is a scent? Well, Barcelona has a “scent.” So, when we come back from Barcelona ALL of my clothes smell like that “scent.” I associate that “scent” with good and happy memories! It makes me happy! Got it?

I want to share some of my favorite scents that will help to shift your mood!

While you can totally go and buy your favorite colognes, perfumes, or go to places that smell like something familiar, this is another alternative.

Let’s be real… I totally do those as well. There is this hotel in Miami Beach and it smells like my first apartment building in Brickell. That was a good time for me! A transition to the life I live now! Good memories. Happy memories. So, I enjoy the smell.

Back to my day to day mood shifting scents.

I am a big believer in aromatherapy and essential oils. Are they life changing? No. I mean I’m not going to lie. But they help. A lot, so why not?

HERE IS WHAT I DO GUYS

I have an aromatherapy diffuser that I purchased on Amazon. I put 3-5 drops of my favorite oils in the diffuser every single day ( for the most part ) depending on my mood.

MY GO-TO MOOD SHIFTING OILS

There are MANY options when it comes to oils, but these are the ones that work BEST for me.

HAPPINESS OILS

Peppermint

Known for elevating your mood by stimulating your mind and body. It promotes clearer thinking, a positive attitude and the ability the breathe easier.

Lavender

Who doesn’t love lavender first of all? Lavender is an olfactory elixir. It is known for improving your mood, soothing anxiety and calming the mind.

Citrus

Doesn’t citrus remind you of summer? Sunshine? Sunshine = happiness? Citrus is known for lifting your mood, especially lemon! Lemon is typically associated with cleanliness and that’s a good feeling! Citrus boosts energy, reduces stress and increases alertness.

Jasmine

It has been said that floral scents are typically associated with happiness … and I’m all about it!

ENERGY + PRODUCTIVITY OILS

I’m really into the “blends” for energy oils. I just blend a few of my favorite oils that are meant to promote energy into one!

BLEND #1: Grapefruit, Lime + Peppermint

This blend really gets me awake and moving

BLEND #2: Eucalyptus, Lemon Grass + Rosemary

This gives me that boost and feel good vibes!

OILS FOR ANXIETY

Chamomile

Helps to clear your mind, improve digestion ( added bonus ) and provide a sense of calm.

Ylang Ylang

When you get anxious your heart races, right? Ylang Ylang is known for slowing down that rapid racing and fight depression by enhancing your mood.

Frankincense

I’m not even kidding, this is my favorite. It gives of a calm and tranquil energy that slows down the mind when you begin to panic. I specifically have Frankincense going when I meditate in the morning.

OILS TO REDUCE STRESS

Eucalyptus

This is a personal preference. This isn’t even known for reducing stress! It’s my little hack. Like I said, you have to find what works for you. Eucalyptus reminds me of the spa, you know? The spa reminds me of zen. I love zen. Zen means reduced stress. I use eucalyptus oil almost every day because I feel balanced, at peace and a sense of calm!

Bergamot

Studies have shown that Bergamot promotes relaxation. It has been said that it improves negative emotions, fatigue and lowers cortisol levels.

OILS FOR DEPRESSION

Rose

The smell of roses have been said to release feel-good hormones in the brain. When your brain releases feel-good hormones, you are more likely to relax.

OILS THAT PROMOTE SLEEP

Lavender

Sedative and anxiety reducing properties!

A lot of these oils can be used for multiple purposes! For example, some of the happiness oils can be used for anxiety, stress or sleep! See what works best for you and I encourage you to give it a shot.
