THE STORY OF A HANGOVER

There is NOTHING worse than waking up with a pounding headache and feeling nauseous after drinking. Am I right? Hello hangover.

Let me set the scene:

You go out ( day or night ) with friends, family, co-workers, your significant other and you want to feel tipsy, right?

Just that feel good buzz, you know? You want to have a good time. A few laughs. You’re at that new trendy bar down the street that EVERYONE has been talking about.

So, you have a glass of wine or two.

But, what typically happens?

You don’t realize how much or a light weight you are and end up with the spins wishing you never had that third glass of wine.

Then, there you are in bed the NEXT DAY regretting your choices.

If you are reading this, it’s probably because you know what I’m talking about and never want it to happen again.

Pedro and I travel a lot, but we aren’t big drinkers, you know? We also live in Miami Beach… but never go out. If I do drink, it’s when we travel and I’m more of a day drinker type of girl.


If anything, I have my usual glass of red wine and call it a day.

( Except for when I’m with my mom. We have a few glasses because wine not? )

MY COLLEGE DAYS

I’M GOING TO SHARE PICTURES SO DON’T JUDGE

I remember when I was in college ( like many other students ), I would take 10 shots of like $10 vodka and find myself throwing up the entire next day.


Worst. Feeling. Ever.

You have a shot or two and are like, “I don’t feel anything,” so you take a few more. Ever been there? You don’t even have the be in college to have had THAT experience…

IT WAS TIME TO GROW UP

You all know that I left college early and am now living in Miami Beach, but I still had my fair share of hangover experiences.

Now that I’m what you call… an “adult,” I have learned a few tips and tricks to not only CURE a hangover, but to take preventative measures, k?

I’m 25 years old, yet I’ll have one drink and it’ll knock me on my ass for a solid week. I feel old AF.

So, preventative measure ARE the cure to my hangovers.

Let me share with you what I’ve learned along the way…

…and in case you were wondering, YES, I have tested these out and so have my friends. As soon as I realized that my strategy worked, I FORCED my friends to give it a try.

OBSESSED & grateful to have discovered these cures.

The first time I ever experienced a hangover, the psycho researcher inside of me decided to Google the shit out of it because I couldn’t let it happen again.

I now have these little rules in place for when I drink because I don’t have time to get hungover. It totally kills my day.

HOW TO TAKE PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

Like I said, preventative measures are everything if you want to prevent a hangover, got it?

There are little things that you can put in place to make drinking that much more enjoyable!

HYDRATION

I will always start with this when it comes to health + wellness. Guys ( and girls ), hydration is everything. When you are dehydrated, you immediately feel fatigued, tired, nauseous and every other bad feeling you can possibly imagine. I’m huge on hydration.

I NEVER used to drink water. I was Diet Coke obsessed. Drinking water ( enough water ) every day has changed my life.

The key to preventing a hangover is to HYDRATE. Drink a few glasses of water BEFORE you even START drinking to make sure your body is well hydrated. Alcohol totally dehydrates you, which is part of the reason you might get a headache.

BOOM.

CHOOSE YOUR POISON

I went to Italy a couple of years ago and visited a winery in Tuscany.

Ummm if you haven’t been, you need to go. It’s gorgeous. That’s a story for another day.

We also go to Spain a lot because Pedro’s family is from there and I notice that I never get hungover or headaches from their wine.

I love a good red wine, and I learned that a lot of wine companies add sulfites and sugars amongst other shit, k? They might add different colors, flavors and aromas as well.

TBH, I think it’s absolutely disgusting that we are purchasing this alcohol without even realizing that it has SO much sugar. These companies make it SO unclear and that really bothers me.

The ingredients within the wine ( if we are talking wine ) are literally making you sick! It’s like eating an entire box of chocolate. No wonder you wake up with a headache, right?

Choose your alcohol carefully and be aware of what you are drinking!

LET’S TALK HANGOVER CURES

Sometimes you just have a little too much to drink, ok? It happens to the best of us.

You went out, had a fun night, wake up the next morning feeling like shit, check Instagram + Snapchat to make sure you didn’t post anything regrettable… fingers crossed! …and now what?

You can’t always PREVENT a hangover. It happens.

This is my step by step process to cure a hangover!

BONUS TIP: Guys ( and girls ), when you are drinking, stay hydrated.

Rule of thumb - for every 2 sips, have a sip of water. This won’t take away the buzz, it’ll just help to prevent a hangover.

IF ALL ELSE FAILS,

HERE’S WHAT YOU DO:

HYDRATE

You are probably so sick of this one, but here’s the trick… Before I go to sleep, I drink 2 LARGE glasses of cold water to hydrate myself. Alcohol dehydrates your body and causes an electrolyte imbalance. When that happens you feel fatigued and probably have a solid headache.

Try coconut water because it rehydrates you and replenishes the electrolytes that you’ve lost. You can drink it plain or add it to a smoothie!

My suggestion would be to just drink it straight up and get it over with if we are being real.

Some people love it and some people hate it. But, I hate a hangover, so I keep a few “emergency” bottles of coconut water in my fridge.

…and I’m not even a drinker.

I’m also a huge fan of adding Apple Cider Vinegar to regular water if you don’t have or like coconut water. I like to have my options laid out.

GET IN YOUR GREENS

Food probably doesn’t sound too appetizing when you are hungover, you know? But starting your day with the vitamins you need to nourish your body will revive you.

I actually looked up a green smooth recipe SPECIFICALLY after a hangover.

Combine spinach, kale, coconut water, banana, blueberries, apples, celery, lemon and some organic peanut butter! Honestly, none of the recipes included peanut butter, but… I couldn’t do it without.

JUMP IN THE SHOWER

Now, you don’t want to take just any shower. Turn the water from hot to cold. As soon as you feel that hangover in the morning, roll out of bed and stand in that shower. Yes, it might sound miserable, but it will feel amazing.

Make the water ice cold for a few seconds and then hot for a few seconds. I’ve done my fair share of research on this and some people believe it is a myth, but it works for me. It helps to wake me up, decrease my headache and feel refreshed.

What this hot to cold shower does is increase your circulation, which eliminates toxins from your body.

SWEAT IT OUT

I know working out or any form of movement sounds painful with a hangover, but after hydrating + the shower, you’ll want to remove as many toxins as possible from your body.

You actually have a couple of options:

  1. Steam it out in a steam shower or even a sauna

  2. Go for a walk or stretch ( whatever form of movement works best for you )

Sweating is a detox and will help ease your hangover.

WRAPPING UP THE HANGOVER

My biggest piece of advice if you are about to go and drink is to hydrate.

Make sure that your body is nourished with the vitamins it needs and take preventative measures. Drink water with your drinks, but in case you forget…

Follow my hangover cure guide. If you get migraines like me, then take a couple of Advil with Diet Coke and THEN hydrate with coconut water.

HOT TIP: You can also try Pedialyte or gatorade to get those electrolytes back in your system.

This has been my go-to hangover cure for a few years now. Super easy and makes a HUGE difference.
