5 SELF DISCIPLINE TIPS
The only way to get work done is by doing it.
Taking action. These are the words that I live by.
I can either stay where I am at or push to get to where I want to be, you know?
Discipline is tough shit. Let’s keep it real. It’s not ALWAYS easy to keep yourself in line, ok? I’m not here to preach to you, but I want to share 5 tips to improve your self discipline.
…because self discipline allows us to get shit done and reach our goals, right?
Without discipline, you are going to be all over the place and no one wants that…
Self discipline doesn’t happen overnight. We aren’t born with it. It is a skill. A learned skill that takes consistent practice!
Here are a few tips to help you with that!
MAKE A TO DO LIST
Set your top 5-8 priorities for the day and don’t stop until they are done.
Go one by one and check off each task as completed. Highlight it. Make it pretty. Find a pretty notebook for your to do list. The little things will make it more fun and exciting, got it?
…and I mean like, get specific.
If your goal is to get in better shape ( for example ), then write down a game plan.
What you are going to eat?
How often you are going to hit the gym?
Where you want to be at the end of each week?
Like get super specific so that you have SOMETHING to achieve that day.
I think that we become less disciplined when…
…we are unsure of what is is we are working for. Or to be honest, when we are unmotivated/disinterested, you know?
Set a goal
Understand how you are going to achieve it
Follow that plan and take action
This gives you guidance and takes out some of the tough work.
…but make it fun! Create an execution board that has your goals, your plan, your tackle list that you can check off. Hang up that board. Make it exciting! You will be more likely to be disciplined because you will have something to follow.
Once you start, it’ll be more difficult to stop.
I saw this on the Netflix TV show, Fauda. I know. Totally random, right?! OH! …and said in a totally different context…
I’m not going to go through the whole story of why that conversation even came up, but what it came down to was this.
If you start to think about something, you end up overthinking.
…and then, you are wasting time. You waste actionable time. You talk yourself out of something. You talk yourself into something else.
You get where this is going, right?
You can’t think. You have to just do.
The second you just start “doing” is the second you become more productive. You just have to go go go and push through. Don’t think about what you have to do. Look at your to do list and just do it.
You’ll be done a lot quicker, and I mean… how great is that?
THROW AWAY TEMPTATIONS
I hate that “out of sight out of mind” mentality.
Personally, I struggle with getting distracted by YouTube or Instagram. When my mind starts to wander, I end up scrolling through my feed or watching makeup tutorials. Serious problem. Like I spend hours.
To stay off of YouTube or prevent myself from scrolling through my feed, I just don’t open the apps.
But, this post is all about self-discipline, so how do I do it?
This is just one example of temptation. I allow myself breaks!
BUT - before I get into breaks, temptation can also consist of… going out with friends or even phone calls while you are in the middle of doing something. Temptation is anything that takes you away from your work or whatever it is that needs to be done. It comes in many forms.
Remove it from your environment.
If you want to eat healthier, then don’t buy junk food.
If you want to be more productive, then turn off your notifications on your phone.
..but I want to talk about breaks, because this also really helps me with self discipline.
In my personal opinion, breaks are going to make you more productive. Just take 15 minute breaks every hour. You will feel like a new person. You’re honestly going to feel refreshed. We can’t work ourselves to death…
That will ruin your creative process and productivity. Breaks allow our minds to rest and reset. It gives us time to think about something OTHER than what we are doing.
Do whatever you want when you take your break.
I like to walk. You can do jumping jacks. You can read a book. You can sit in silence. You can eat. You can do whatever it is that you want. Just take a fucking break every so often, k?
I get it. We can get so wrapped up in what we are doing that a break almost gets us out of our “zone.”
I talked about this in a recent post, but the truth is that if you don’t take that break, you’ll end up being less productive.
Try it and find out why.
