HOW TO MAKE YOURSELF WORK WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT

THAT DREADED MORNING

NOT IN THE MOOD TO WORK

DO YOU PREFER AUDIO?

We’ve ALL been in this position. You hear your alarm go off, you get out of bed, get ready and then get that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach because you don’t feel like working.

Can we all agree that it’s impossible to be on our “A” game EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK? There are going to be days where we just aren’t feeling it, you know? Days where we aren’t as inspired and days where we aren’t as productive.

Because of social media, it kind of feels like everyone is extremely productive and a HUGE success everyday, right?

The reality is that we aren’t always going to be highly productive, but we also need to get things done.

So, how do you make yourself work when you just aren’t feeling it?

PREPARATION

SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS

I personally see brands that are BEYOND active on a daily basis and it used to BLOW my mind.

It was crazy to me how they were so “on it” every day. Every post was great quality. They had amazing engagement rates and they were doing well!

I always found myself COMPARING what I was doing to them. That’s a BIG no no.

How was I going to get to that level when I felt like ( at the time ) I was pushing myself beyond my limits?

It’s called preparation.

Before I even get into how to make yourself work when you don’t feel like working, there are ways to make sure your work still gets done.

Whether your business is on social media or you are in a completely different industry, there are ways to prepare some of our work in advance to avoid feeling “stuck,” ok?

TIME BATCHING

One of my tricks is called time batching! I batch my schedule exceptionally well ( to be totally real ) and that is one of my secrets to being highly productive!

I dedicate certain days to certain tasks.

For example: Sunday is content development day for my blog. I set aside 4-5 hours to write quality content!

ADVANCED SCHEDULING

My second tip is to schedule content or emails in advance!

On a day where you feel motivated and energized, knock out emails and schedule social media content in advance!

You can use tools such as:

  1.
Hootsuite

  2. Buffer

These are great scheduling tools for social media! I’ve noticed that when we have a lot of little things to get done, we just don’t want to do it. It gets repetitive and boring.

If we schedule in advance, we remove that repetitive, YET highly important task.

Hello preparation.

STRATEGIZE YOUR TO-DO LIST

giphy.gif

This is one of my favorite tips to be productive even when you don’t feel like working.

We always have a reason as to why we don’t feel like working, you know? But, one of them tends to be feeling overwhelmed or even burnt out.

In order to avoid those two awful feelings, I have a strategic way to create my to-do list. I make it LESS overwhelming.

This way, I can mentally PUSH myself to get MORE done.

  • I write out ALL of the tasks that I need to accomplish.

  • Then, I HIGHLIGHT the TOP 5-8 most important tasks that I need to do for THAT DAY.

**This way, I am not focusing on my massive to-do list. I’m focusing on my 5-8 tasks which is LESS overwhelming.

  • I go one task at a time and end up being more productive. This helps me to feel more motivated & prepared for those “off” days when you just don’t want to work.

Now, what if you’ve done this or just don’t want to?

HOW TO MAKE YOURSELF WORK WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT

ACCEPT YOUR CURRENT MOOD

One thing that we try to do when those unwanted feelings come on is attempt to push them away.

By pushing them away, we are avoiding them and therefore, making it last longer, ok?

The first thing that you should do is understand that you might not feel like working everyday. It’s ok. Sit with the feeling. Accept the feeling. Understand that it’s normal and part of life.

Admit to yourself that you are stuck. Admit to yourself that you don’t feel like working.

Studies have shown that self-compassion is the best way to overcome this challenge.

FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS

Just as I mentioned in the preparation step, narrowing down your to-do list by what is most important for the day is a great way to avoid the burn out.

It’s a great way to push yourself a little bit more to get your work done. It’s a great way to help you cope with your circumstances of not wanting to be at work, ok?

Focus on what matters and even what you enjoy!

SAY NO

giphy.gif

It’s ok to do things for yourself. To take time for yourself and to say no to opportunities, meetings and plans that don’t serve you.

If you want to be highly productive and are having a tough day trying to get yourself to work… say no! Say no to anything that doesn’t add value or serve you!

GET MOVING

I talk about movement all the time. Sometimes a brisk 10 minute walk can wake us up and spark a little bit of energy! That energy can turn into creativity + productivity. You’d be surprised at how efficient a quick walk can be!

RELAX YOUR MIND

I never used to take naps, but today I love to take naps! I find them to be extremely beneficial to my life. A 30 minute nap helps me to refresh my mind and reenergize my body. I suggest giving an afternoon nap a try if you are having a day if you don’t feel like working.

THE TAKEAWAY

Obsessed with these tips & I hope you found them super valuable! Remember, preparation is KEY. Try to do what matters most in the moment and keep moving forward!

You’ve totally got this!
