Can you imagine a simpler life where things are less overwhelming?

Where you wake up, have routines in place that make decision making easier, healthier habits that make you more productive and where you just feel “light?”

( that’s the best way I can describe it )

Because there was a point where I couldn’t, but I finally learned a few tricks.

WHY I CHOSE TO SIMPLIFY MY LIFE

YOU CAN’T TAKE ADVICE FROM JUST “ANYONE”

You know that I have to start my posts with story time, right? Sooo here we go!

When I started my business I was all over the place. Everything was new, I had a lot to learn and my desk was ACTUALLY stacked with papers. I couldn’t get it together. I was going a million miles per hour, so keeping up with simplicity wasn’t a top priority, you know?

My priority was to sign clients and keep my business running.

What ended up happening was A MESS. I had about a hundred to-do lists, I didn’t even own a calendar and I was “winging it.” That’s never good, right? My days started and ended without a plan and I went to bed BEYOND exhausted.

I was absolutely all over the place.

The thought of even becoming organized was an overwhelming thought. Having to actually make the change to simplify overwhelmed me.

Does that even make sense? LOL

But, what choice did I have? It got to a point where my day to day life became unhealthy.

HERE IS WHAT MY DAY LOOKED LIKE:

  • Wake up

  • Work

  • Work more

  • Panic that I missed something

  • Work

  • Try to find something that I was missing

  • Work

  • Forget to eat

  • Maybe workout

  • Work

  • Go to sleep

I’m not even exaggerating! I lacked balance. I lacked a routine. I lacked organization. I had zero time for ME. I wasn’t taking care of my health ( physical or mental ). This was just unhealthy.

At the time, I thought it was fine.

Was I overwhelmed? Yes. But, was I growing my business? YES! So, in my mind, that’s what mattered. I was making moves.

Feeling overwhelmed mattered, but I just didn’t know HOW to make a change, you know?

MY PROBLEM &

THE IMPORTANCE OF SIMPLIFYING YOUR LIFE

The problem was that this unhealthy behavior resulted in poor habits that negatively affected my business. I could have been doing an even BETTER job than I was if I could just start with…

…one small improvement at a time.

What happened was that I hit a wall. I had a moment where I realized that although my business was growing, I was unhappy. I didn’t feel good. The growth was great, but I was unhappy.

I was constantly swamped with work, overwhelmed and the lack of self care really got to me.

So, today I want to share with you what I did to make a major life change to simplify my life!

STEP NUMBER ONE

DE-CLUTTER

The first thing that I did to start this process of SIMPLICITY was to de-clutter my home.

If you listen to my podcasts or read my posts, then you’ll notice that I always talk about the benefits of cleaning up. I took a Saturday and cleaned out my entire home. I went through every cabinet, drawer, my closet ( not Pedro’s stuff or he would have killed me ) and I purged. I donated everything that I could and threw away what was garbage.

I should have taken a picture to show you the difference, but it FELT like a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. Waking up in the morning to a clean home, where I can open the drawers, where I had what I needed and where I didn’t have papers everywhere was empowering. It felt amazing.

STEP NUMBER TWO

GET A PLANNER

After I cleaned out my home, it was time to take simplicity to the next level. Remember when I said I didn’t have a calendar and I’d panic that I missed something all the time? Yeah, that had to end.

I got a cute planner with some fun pens and highlighters to organize my life. This way, I’d never miss an appointment.

To be totally honest, it was a tough adjustment, which sounds crazy. But, now I can’t imagine how I didn’t use one before. It’s as if another weight was lifted off of my shoulders! Now, I didn’t have to panic if I was forgetting something. SIMPLE.

You can do this on your phone if that’s easiest for you. I’m a pen and paper type of girl.

STEP NUMBER THREE

PRIORITIZE YOUR TO-DO LIST

So, I had hundreds of papers with things that I had to do all over my desk, right?

That had to go. I needed to keep my to-do list in ONE place. Get rid of all of those papers and just have one point of reference, ok? This is something that I had tried many times and failed.

Here’s what I did: I got TWO little notebooks. One for my home and one for when I travel ( or to take in the car ). I figured that was pretty fair, right?

For something SO simple, it took a few weeks for me to get in the habit of keeping my to-do list in ONE place.

But, I did it.

The other thing that I did to simplify my life was to prioritize my to-do list. Everyday, I’d highlight the top 5-8 most important tasks that needed to get done and only focused on those. It’s amazing what a little structure can do.

STEP NUMBER FOUR

CREATE A MORNING ROUTINE

Again, if you read my blogs and listen to my podcast, then you know how important a morning routine is for me.

I have a pretty strict routine because I believe if you start your day putting YOU first, you’ll be able to make better decisions. You’ll become the best version of yourself, feel more energized, motivated and therefore, productive.

I used to see this as a waste of time because I felt that I didn’t have time. Sooo, I made time! I started waking up an hour earlier. You can read all about my morning routine in my recent blog post or listen to the episode on HOW TO create a killer morning routine, but here are a few things that I do to start my day!

A FEW STEPS IN MY MORNING ROUTINE

  1. Hydration ( 2 glasses of water )

  2. Make the bed

  3. Let the light in the bedroom

  4. Meditate for 3-10 minutes ( I also set my intentions for the day during this time )

  5. Journal ( I like to write 3 pages of anything that comes to my mind )

  6. Movement ( listen to a good podcast during this time )

These are just a few steps that work amazing for me. This routine puts me in a good mood, it keep me inspired, wakes me up and gets me going in the morning.

When I’m done, I feel ready to take on the day. Whereas, if I just go straight to work, I feel more overwhelmed and I’m less productive.

STEP NUMBER FIVE

IMPROVE YOUR EATING HABITS

Food is powerful. It’s meant to nourish + fuel your body, right? Often we abuse food. When our life is a mess, we might also be indulging a bit TOO much in foods that aren’t benefitting our body.

The foods that we consume might be affecting our mental health. If you are eating a lot of sugar, then you are going to feel tired and fatigued. If you nourish your body with the nutrients it needs, you are going to feel more awake, which leads to increased productivity and happiness!

Try to eliminate some of the sugar and replace it with greens and foods filled with the vitamins we need to support our mind, body and soul!

The better you feel, the easier your life will become.

FINAL WORDS OF ADVICE

Let’s keep this simple. Start with the basics. Build a solid foundation in your home and create healthy routines. Take care of your mental health and you will be able to develop healthier habits that make your life less overwhelming. Helllooooo simplicity!
